What You Need to Know

The Goose Island IPA is brewed in the traditional English style and the result has produced seven awards over the past two decades. Must be pretty good, right? Let’s get to the review.

Appearance

The IPA pours a brilliantly clear golden hue and is topped by an inch-thick cap of soapy white foam that bubbles away rapidly. The head’s reduction leaves behind a ring of bubbles around the glass.

Aroma

The aroma isn’t particularly strong but offers a scent of floral and herbal hops.

Flavor

The palate is led by a mild bite of floral hops atop lightly toasted bread. The tasting crests to bigger bite of pine and grapefruit citrus. The bitterness lingers through the finish and is only undercut slightly with sweet orange.

Mouthfeel

The feel has a crisp draw that becomes smooth through the middle and finishes dryly. The bitterness is harsh at first but as the beer loses its chill, the astringency turns moderate.

Overall

The head’s persistence is brief but otherwise its appearance is fine. The aroma fades all too quickly and isn’t the most enticing anyway. At first, the feel and palate are overpowered with bitter hops. But as the beer warms, the beer finds a more appropriate balance.

Overall, while the beer ticks the style boxes, it’s not exactly mind-blowing. After AB-InBev acquired Goose Island, their IPA has been made widely available throughout the country and elsewhere. So you’ll likely come across it somewhere along the way. Whether you decided to give it a try is up to you, but do know there are better options out there.

  1. Love Goose Island I. P.A and Green Line beers but the canning process leaves a lot to be desired. Every other can I open starts foaming and I lose a quarter of a can of beer. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
